Sallie Hussey has joined the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Nashville, Tenn., as its new president and chief executive officer.

Hussey has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Mississippi State University, Starkville, Miss., and a master’s degree in public relations from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.  She served as a non-profit consultant with Management Solutions Group specializing in strategic planning and fundraising.  Previously, she was the executive director of CASA, Inc. of Nashville, a non-profit agency that works to find safe permanent homes for abused children.  Hussey was also an administrator with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital charged with overseeing growth and change of the community and family service divisions.

Hussey serves on the local board of directors for Youth Villages and is a volunteer with CASA and Junior Achievement in Nashville.  She is the past president for the Association of Nonprofit Executives; a 2004 graduate of Leadership Nashville; and a member of the Downtown Rotary Club.  Hussey was named to The Tennessean’s list of “Top 40 Under 40 Business Leaders.”

““I really do consider it an honor to be a part of the League,” said Hussey.  “I’ve followed the agency since I moved to Nashville, and it’s wonderful to work with such a dynamic organization and be a part of the amazing things the League does in our community.”

For more than 80 years, The League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has served as a provider of a wide range of programs and services to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.  The not-for-profit agency began in 1927 as a lip reading class.  Its signature programs include interpreting and transcribing services.  In addition, the League offers an employment program, youth services program, classes and workshops for the Middle Tennessee region and parts of Southern Kentucky.  Headquartered in Nashville, the League has satellite offices in Franklin, Clarksville, Fairview and Murfreesboro.

“Ms. Hussey brings an impressive mix of business acumen, community awareness, and perspicacity to our organization,” said Poli Polidoro Hughes, co-chair, League’s board of directors.  “The League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has unusual growth opportunities on the horizon, and we are pleased to have Ms. Hussey at the helm to lead us in capitalizing on them.”
