January Board Meeting

The Board of Directors met on January 25, 2010.  A synopsis of the minutes is below.

Board members were given a recently published, nonprofit board-member handbook and talked about best practices of effective boards.

Members talked about the November town hall meeting about the new name.  There has been a lot of discussion on how to move forward and what, if any, changes can be made.  The executive committee will meet with the newly formed advocacy committee (Deaf/HH volunteers) and discussion or possibly a vote will continue at the March board meeting.

Metro Council passed the Convention Center proposal which means a new convention center will be built near the agency.  The building committee will monitor the situation but does not want to recommend listing the building for sale at this time.

The agency’s new paid-time-off system and new employee manual were discussed along with financial statements.

To raise money for the Minnie Pearl Memorial Scholarship, March 11 will be the first annual Minnie Breakfast event.  The Big Band Bash will be held on May 15 and sponsorship money is coming in well.  Board members were reminded that foundations ask how many board members give money to the agency and reminded everyone to make a financial pledge.

Members of the Deaf/HH community who attended the meeting were welcomed and recognized before the meeting was adjourned.  The next board meeting will be held on Monday, March 22, at noon. All nonprofit board meetings are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.
