Thanksgiving…

Last week was a week of change.  We changed our name and along with it, much more.  Many small things changed like letterhead, nametags, envelopes, and email addresses.  The more important things stayed the same.  Our annual Youth Center spaghetti supper was Friday night and it was fantastic!  I was watching our teenagers serve noodles and sauce, and I greeted a couple who said, “We wouldn’t miss this for anything!  We’ve been every year!”  I’m so thankful that even though things change in this agency and will continue to do so, some things stay the same.

We may change the color of our logo or the location of our agency (new convention center?) or add new programs and change staff over the years.  But, we will continue to be a place for Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals who need us in any way.  That will never change.

Thanks for being a part of all the activities over the last week.  As always, stop by and join in the fun or volunteer.  The doors are open!

What’s in a name…

We are officially Hearing Bridges – Serving the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing Communities!  What a wonderful journey it’s been, and I owe personal thanks to our fabulous name-change team for their fantastic work getting us to this point!

How did we spend our last day as the League?  Well, celebrating, of course!  Not only celebrating our new name and the opportunities I know it will bring us, but also celebrating those who paved the way to make this 80-year-old agency the successful organization it is today.  We celebrated all our work and were reminded of our rich history as an agency and our responsibility to serve deaf and hard of hearing individuals in middle Tennessee.

Will a new name help us achieve more?  Well, it has certainly created a spark and renewed interest.  But, the true test will be in the coming months and years.  We eagerly await the challenge to serve all those across middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky who suffer from hearing loss, or know someone who does, under the new name Hearing Bridges!

What’s the New Name?

I will admit it. I’m scared.  If you haven’t heard, the League is changing its name. While I know change is a necessity for growth, and without it, almost the death-knell for a nonprofit agency, a change this significant is not made without a lot of thought.  It would have been just as fool-hearted to take this name change lightly as it would have been to pass over the opportunity completely.  We have taken it seriously with a fantastic name-change team working on the details over the summer, and we have a giant reveal party and celebration planned for November 9.

What’s the new name?  Of course you are all invited to our Open House reveal to find out!  I hope you like it.  Just as the committee, board, and staff struggled with the decision, clients and supporters may, too.  But, I hope you will remember that while it is important, and it’s a symbol of who we are, we are not just a name.  This agency with an 80-year history will continue to serve D/deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals who need us for many, many years to come no matter what you call us!

What a thrill to be a part of this amazing agency!  Please join us Monday, November 9, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. to help us celebrate the next phase of service to those struggling with hearing loss.
